Bose donates most of his company to MIT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Successful entrepreneurs often donate generously to their favorite causes, but here's a new twist: Amar Bose is essentially donating his company to his alma mater.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced Friday that Bose, the 81-year-old founder of the sound system company that bears his name, has donated the majority of Bose Corp.'s stock to the school.

The donation is in the form of non-voting shares, MIT said. The monetary value of the shares were not disclosed, and MIT cannot sell its Bose shares. The school will not participate in the management or governance of the company, but it will receive annual cash dividends on its shares when Bose pays them out.

A spokeswoman for Bose said the company will remain privately held and "operate as it always has." She declined to comment further on the gift.

"Dr. Bose has always been more concerned about the next two decades than about the next two quarters," MIT president Susan Hockfield said in a prepared statement. "[He] has asked us not to shine too bright a spotlight on him today. So to honor that wish, let us simply celebrate Dr. Bose's profound belief in the transformative power of an MIT education."
Tech's $100 million philanthropists

Bose received his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Ph.D in electrical engineering from MIT. He also taught undergraduate electrical engineering at MIT from 1956 to 2001, maintaining a faculty role at MIT long after his 1964 foundation of founded Bose Corp.

Bose currently employs about 9,000 staffers and is a major economic force in its hometown of Framingham, Mass. The company is known for its high-end speaker systems and headphones.

Gasp! White iPhone 4 is thicker than black one

(CNN) -- In the tech world, a fraction of a millimeter is enough space to to start an iPhone conversation.

A day after the long-awaited white iPhone 4 hit stores, Web chatter was focused on the fact that it appears to be a shade thicker than the 10-month-old black model. (Wired.com measures the difference at a whopping 0.2 millimeters).

So, what's the big deal? For most people, the answer is: "Nothing."

But for some current (or, now, former) black iPhone owners, some models of tight-fitting, precision cases won't fit on their new phone. Relatively big cases should be fine.

To many observers, this is just further evidence that no detail about Apple gadgets is too trivial to go unreported.

(Add that to the ever-so-slightly different placement of the mute switch on the Verizon iPhone and you're creating the need for a veritable cornucopia of different iPhone cases. Sort of.)

The leading theory on the white phone's gain in girth is that extra coating was needed to keep light out of the phone so the camera would work. The aluminum antenna band around the phone's edge is no thicker than the black iPhone's, just the painted glass casing.

Apple vice president Phil Schiller suggested as much, saying that the white coloring interfered with the iPhone's proximity sensors.

Maybe this'll be a short-lived issue anyway. The next iPhone (either the iPhone 5 or a permutation of the iPhone 4, similar to the 3GS) should be out by the end of the year

Verizon says 4G data outage is fixed

(Mashable) -- UPDATE 11:30 a.m. ET: Verizon has posted a Twitter message saying, "4G LTE up and running. Thank you for your patience."

Verizon's LTE network has been having some major issues in the past 24 hours, and the company has issued an official statement about the problem, promising a fix as soon as possible.

Luckily, while the 4G portion of Verizon's data communication has been unavailable, the 3G network is working. According to Verizon, 4G LTE Smartphones should still be able to make calls, but customers are currently unable to activate any 4G LTE devices.

Verizon claims it has determined the cause of the 4G LTE network connection issue, and is "continuing to work to restore connections."

Meanwhile, Engadget reports that Verizon has postponed the launch of Samsung Droid Charge, which is hardly surprising as it is also an LTE device.

Why the white iPhone 4 took so long

(CNN) -- On the day Apple debuted the oft-delayed white-colored iPhone 4, the company's marketing department gave a nod to the product's troubled history.

"Finally," read the big headline Thursday above a picture of the elusive white phone on the homepage of Apple.com.

The white model was supposed to ship alongside the black one at the iPhone 4's launch last June. But design and manufacturing complications delayed the process by 10 months, catching Apple off guard, executives say.

As CNN reported last month, earlier test models of the white iPhone 4 produced blurry photos, especially when the flash was used. Its whiteness confused the proximity sensor, which detects when the phone is held next to someone's head and turns off the touchscreen to preserve battery life and prevent apps from being opened accidentally.

These issues weren't present in older iPhones that came in white because they didn't have flash photography; the proximity sensor was unaffected because the front side of previous models was black. The iPad 2 also lacks a flash, and few people attempt to hold a tablet up to their heads.

Philip Schiller, Apple's chief marketing executive, described the white iPhone 4's development as "challenging" in an interview this week with the website All Things Digital.

"We thought we were there a year ago, or less than that, when we launched the iPhone 4, and we weren't," Schiller said in that interview. "It's not as simple as making something white. There's a lot more that goes into both the material science of it -- how it holds up over time...but also in how it all works with the sensors."

In an Apple statement this week, Schiller said: "We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we've worked to get every detail right."

Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White predicts that the white model could help drive sales of Apple's phones. He says Apple could sell 1 million to 1.5 million every three months until the next iPhone model is unveiled, which is expected to be this fall.

"This delay has created a certain mystique and scarcity value around the 'white' iPhone 4," White wrote in a report. "The purchase of consumer electronic devices is not always a completely rational decision, and people buy Apple products for many different reasons, including status, aesthetics, functionality, quality and the 'cool factor.'"

Even Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to be aware of the fuss surrounding white models of his company's gadgets. Last month Jobs made a subtle joke when he unveiled the iPad 2, which comes in both white and black.

For the iPad 2, "we'll be shipping white from Day One," he said with emphasis, to laughs from the audience.

Forty-five people were lined up at Apple's flagship New York store Thursday morning to buy white iPhones, according to a CNNMoney report. They joined the others who were waiting for a shot at the limited supply of iPad 2s, a product that's still drawing morning crowds seven weeks after its release.

Amazon sales rise, but profit comes up short

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Amazon's stock fell 5.7% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company reported first-quarter earnings that fell by one-third compared to a year earlier -- and sharply missed Wall Street forecasts.

After the bell Tuesday, Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) reported that its net income in the first quarter fell to $201 million, or 44 cents a share, compared to last year's $299 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were looking for earnings of 61 cents a share.

Amazon's sales during the quarter rose 38% to $9.9 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $9.5 billion.

Shares fell nearly 6% after hours as investors were rattled by the earnings miss, but they had recovered a bit, to a 2% loss, by 6 pm. ET. Amazon shares have been sluggish in 2011, rising only 1.3% year-to-date as of Tuesday's close, even as the broader market has rallied.

Investors also looked to a partially downbeat forecast for the second quarter. Amazon expects sales of $8.9 billion to $9.7 billion, but it expects its operating income to decline.

Amazon set a wide range for its operating income forecast, predicting that it will make between $95 million and $245 million -- which would be a drop of 9% to 65%, compared with the year-ago period.

On a post-earnings conference call with analysts, chief financial officer Tom Szkutak said the earthquake in Japan reduced international revenue by 5%, to a total of 27%.

"Growth rates have picked up, but they're not back to levels we saw before the event," Szkutak said.

He also noted that Amazon may build more order fulfillment centers than the nine it previously announced, thanks to "tremendous growth."

The company didn't talk much in its earnings release about the issues that crunched its profit. Instead, it highlighted its recent product releases.
Why I sold to Amazon: 3 startups' stories

A gray Cloud: However, one of those new products is linked to a recent kerfuffle for Amazon. In late March the company unveiled Cloud Drive, an Internet service that lets customers store music and other digital files on the company's servers and access them on computers, smartphones and other devices.

But just a few days ago, Amazon's cloud service suffered a major outage, downing websites it hosts -- including Reddit and Quora. Amazon hasn't yet said what caused the cascade of problems kicked off by an early-Thursday "networking event."

In a series of running updates on its Web services "Health Dashboard," Amazon wrote on Monday afternoon that it had completed its recovery efforts related to the outage -- but "a small number of volumes will not be fully recoverable."

That's a major problem for Amazon, which has touted its indomitable infrastructure. Customers who lost data will be even more unhappy.

Szkutak brushed off an analyst's question about the cloud outage, saying only that "the team is working very deliberately on the way they identify and validate the root causes of this incident. I don't really have a lot to add at this time."

Amazon doesn't break out its cloud services revenue. It's a small but growing part of its business: non-retail sales, the line item that includes Amazon's cloud hosting revenue, generated $311 last quarter. That's a drop in the bucket compared to Amazon's $9.9 billion in total revenue, but it marks a big jump from $188 million a year ago.

Still mum on Kindle: One of the new products Amazon touted in its earnings release is the "Kindle with Special Offers" unveiled earlier this month. The ad-supported e-reader sells for $114, which is $25 less than its ad-free counterpart, Amazon's $139 Kindle Wi-Fi.

Amazon has never revealed sales figures for the Kindle, which competes with other dedicated e-readers including the Barnes & Noble (BKS, Fortune 500) Nook, the Sony (SNE) Reader and Kobo from Borders (BGP), as well as Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) multipurpose iPad.

"We've seen device growth from both a profit and unit standpoint," Szkutak said in response to an analyst question about Kindle sales. "We're very, very happy to see the progress we've made. "

Friendster plans to nuke its user data

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- This is the way social networks end: Not with a bang, but a "pivot."

Friendster, a pioneering social networking site launched in the pre-Facebook days of 2002, has been struggling for years to justify its continued existence. The site announced Tuesday that it will soon unveil a redesign aimed at giving Friendster a new identity -- but as part of its overhaul, it plans to erase most of the data users have stored on the site.

An e-mail sent Tuesday to registered users told them to expect "a new and improved Friendster site in the coming weeks." It also warned them that their existing account profile, photos, messages, blog posts and more will be deleted on May 31. A basic profile and friends list will be preserved for each user.

Friendster offered an exporter app on its site to let users download their content or port it to third party sites like Flickr or Multiply. Friendster didn't go in details about its new identity, but it appears to be positioning itself as a casual gaming destination.

The site collected nearly $50 million from investors over the years, but technical problems and a general failure to keep up with the times doomed it to also-ran status. Friendster's traffic and active-user count have almost flatlined. Its current owner, Malaysia Internet company MOL Global, bought the site in late 2009 for rumored $26 million price tag.

Unless Friendster is able to pull off a Phoenix-like rise from the ashes, it will be yet another casualty of the Facebook empire, which has nearly stomped out other competitors like MySpace on its path to total Internet domination. Games and other apps have exploded on the platform, giving birth to companies like FarmVille maker Zynga -- and, often, netting Facebook a share of their profits.

In an ironic twist, Facebook currently owns the patents on many social-networking features Friendster helped popularize. Facebook quietly purchased Friendster's patent portfolio from MOL last year, giving it the intellectual-property rights to inventions like connecting users within social networks, linking relationship information with outside databases, and compelling users to upload and share their own content.

'Hills' Star Kristin Cavallari Engaged To Jay Cutler

She may have been reality TV's resident man-eater on both "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills," but it seems that Kristin Cavallari is ready to settle down. Sorry Justin Bobby, Stephen Colletti and Brody Jenner!

The small-screen star and her beau, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, are engaged, according to People.com. A source told the website that the QB asked Cavallari to marry him while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

"He surprised her with a quick trip to Cabo to ask her to marry him," the source said. The pair have been dating since last fall, and according to Perezhilton.com, Cutler gave Cavallari a 5.2-carat engagement ring. The site confirms that the engagement took place in Cabo and that he's wanted to propose for some time.

A rep for Cavallari had not responded to MTV News' request for comment by press time.

Since "The Hills" wrapped up last year, Cavallari has kept a relatively low profile, contrary to her time appearing on MTV, when she always seemed to be stirring the pot. Whether she was in a girl fight or stealing someone's boyfriend, Cavallari was always the life of the party.

"Gosh, top moment [on 'The Hills'] ... I think I had a couple," Cavallari told MTV News last year, recalling her rooftop fight with Audrina over Justin. "I think my biggest thing was the first episode, where I really came in with a bang," she laughed. "And it was like, 'All right, clearly I'm back.' "

"I think that's sort of my I-wish-I-didn't moment, when I made out with Stacie in Vegas," she continued. "That was one episode I had to call my dad and say, 'Dad, sorry — this is going to be your least favorite episode.' "

Princess Diana to be present at Royal wedding?

At the William-Kate wedding, Prince's mother will be present in spirit

The picture of Princess Diana and Prince Charles on their wedding day will perhaps continue to be one of the most enduring images of the last century.

Later this week, as Di's son Prince William exchanges vows, the image will haunt us even more.

Diana, who died tragically in a freak mishap, will certainly be missed at what is being proclaimed as the wedding of the century.

Prince William however has ensured that his mother's family and select friends are present at the event.

According to the Royal Wedding guest list released recently, Lady Di's brother Earl Spencer and his fianc e Karen Gordon have been invited to the wedding. Reports suggest that they will be seated right behind the Middletons and their friends at the abbey.

Here's a quick look at who will be present at the wedding of the century... and who won't:

HETRICK: 'Jesus Christ Superstar' takes on federal deficit

When I was in seventh grade, the youth minister at our church introduced me to the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

With its rock beat, humanized biblical characters and alternative take on the traditional Easter story, it was an instant hit among our junior-high crowd.

This Easter week, as is our wont, my wife and I will pull out our “Superstar” DVD, pop it into the PlayStation, and watch Jesus, Judas, Pontius Pilate, King Herod, Mary Magdalene, Simon Zealotes, Caiaphas and all the rest tell their tale on the stark desert landscape.

One “Superstar” scene always reminds me of our entitlement society—and how some react to the notion of helping “the least among us.”

Fed up with moneychangers at the temple, Jesus is wandering alone, talking to God, when a group of needy people appears. One after another, they reach out, begging for help, and singing:

See my eyes, I can hardly see.

See me stand, I can hardly walk.

I believe you can make me whole.

See my tongue, I can hardly talk.

See my skin, I’m a mass of blood.

See my legs, I can hardly stand.

I believe you can make me well.

See my purse, I’m a poor, poor man.

Will you touch, will you mend me Christ?

Won’t you touch, will you heal me Christ?

Will you kiss, you can cure me Christ?

Won’t you kiss, won’t you pay me Christ?

Jesus being Jesus, he tries to help. But soon, he’s overwhelmed by the mass of humanity.

“There’s too many of you,” he sings. “Don’t push me. There’s too little of me. Don’t crowd me.” Until, finally, he shrieks, “Heal yourselves!”

Now, we can save for another day a theological discussion on the merits or demerits of a biblical rock musical.

But whatever the religious interpretation, that scene smacks of what we’re hearing from pols and pundits about Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, health insurance, food stamps, defense spending, foreign aid, public education, public radio, pregnancy prevention, environmental protection, budget-cutting, debt limits, tax cuts, etc., ad nauseum.

And with their focus not on public need, but on taxpayer expense, the budget-cutters, in particular, seem to be screaming, “Heal yourselves!”

But is that the best way to sell these ideas?

Two decades ago, President George H.W. Bush called for “a kinder, gentler nation.”

While tax-cutting may be kinder and gentler for wealthy people today, and while budget-cutting is promoted as beneficial to future generations, there’s nothing kind or gentle about saying to those in need: “We’re cutting you off,” or “We’re cutting you back” and “Fend for yourselves”—especially without explaining how.

So, in addition to, “We have to live within our means” and “Heal yourselves,” I’d be more receptive if the budget-cutters would explain the alternative.

For example: If we blow up Medicare as we know it—including its relatively low administrative costs—how will it be more efficient to run 50 separate programs in 50 separate states—and will that cost less than the current system?

If proposed Medicare-replacing federal block grants aren’t sufficient to cover the cost of 50 separate programs, how will fixed-income seniors make up the difference?

If we stop being the world’s cop and also cut back on foreign aid, in what new ways will we fulfill the government’s obligation to “provide for the common defense” in an increasingly dangerous world—and will that cost less than preventive measures?

If we stop funding Planned Parenthood, can we count on moms, dads, churches, schools, hospitals and other organizations to handle sex education, pregnancy prevention, Pap smears, breast-cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease prevention and women’s health services? What if disease escalates as a result of these cutbacks? Who will cover the cost—and will it cost less than preventive measures?

What’s more, if cutbacks in sex education and birth control result in more unwanted pregnancies, who will help families in poverty raise their kids, pay for their education and keep them off the dole? And will it cost less than preventive measures?

If Environmental Protection Agency cutbacks result in higher cleanup costs or higher disease rates for future generations, who will pay—and will it cost less than preventive measures?

If we slash funding for smoking-cessation programs and see more lung cancer, heart disease, asthma, emphysema and other illnesses as a result, who will pay—and will it cost less than preventive measures?

If we fail to reform financial regulations and that triggers another job-killing recession, who will help us recover—and will it cost less than preventive measures?

We don’t know the answers to such questions, because the only things we hear from budget-slashers are latter-day versions of “no room at the inn” and “heal yourselves.”

Where I learned about the resurrection and the life, that’s not what Jesus would do.•

Lakers have no solution for Chris Paul

NEW ORLEANS -- There wasn't much for Phil Jackson to say after he saw his team blow an early nine-point lead and later trail by as many as nine in the second half of their 93-88 Game 4 loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday.

"We punked out there on the court tonight," Jackson said after the seven-seeded Hornets tied the No. 2 seeded Lakers 2-2 in their first round series.

More like got punked.

By Chris Paul.

The two-time defending champs are all of the sudden in a best-of-three series just to get to the second round and Paul, the hottest player in the playoffs right now, is standing in their way.

He hasn't just been good, he's been historically great.

On Sunday he had a triple-double -- by the end of the third quarter. Paul finished with more points (27), assists (15) and rebounds (11) than any other player on the court.

"Chris Paul, that was one of the better performances I have ever seen in the playoffs," said Hornets coach Monty Williams. "A lot of guys have performances when they score. He scored, he dished it out, he rebounded. He made tough, tenacious plays."

He set the table for the series in the Hornets' Game 1 win, going off for 33 points, 14 assists and seven boards, a statistical feat only reached in the playoffs four other times in NBA history by Oscar Robertson (twice), Walt Frazer and Magic Johnson.

The Lakers celebrated their defensive adjustment of putting Kobe Bryant on him in Game 2 and he still ended up with 20 and nine and they limited him to four points in the second half of Game 3, but he still finished with 22 and 8.

"You're going against one of the best point guards in this game and when it's all said and done, he'll be one of the best that's ever laced 'em up," Bryant said. "That's just a bad, little dude, man."

Or as Paul put it: "There's nothing I'm trying to do new, I'm just being me."

The Lakers better do something new against Paul, and quick, or all their dreams of a three-peat could end before they ever really get started.

Paul had just four points in the first half on Sunday, but it wasn't like the quiet second half he had Friday because it came with nine assists as Trevor Ariza had 16 points by intermission, and the Hornets had a four-point lead.

"We can have one or the other," said Andrew Bynum. "We can have him score points or we can have him getting people involved. We can't have both. He had 27 and 15 assists. That's nearly 60-some points, we can't allow that."

Said Pau Gasol: "We got to minimize his actions as far as whether we want him to score on that particular night, or we want him to give it up."

The funny thing is that both Bynum and Gasol spoke as if they were in charge of controlling Paul, when this series has been the complete opposite with Paul controlling the Lakers' whole team.

"He made a lot of things happen out there," Jackson said. "A triple-double is nothing to sneeze at in a playoff game."

And he did it all with a bandaged right eye, a wrapped left thumb and a sore hip, making the Lakers look like the invalids.

In Game 1, he outrebounded Gasol seven to six. In Game 4 he outrebounded Gasol and Lamar Odom, combined, 11 to eight.

"We didn't expect or like the fact that he got that many rebounds," Gasol said. "We kind of expected that he'd get 20-plus [points] or 10-plus assists because he's done that a few times in his career, but the rebounds I think we got to put more pressure on him as a team defensively and offensively."

In the postseason you expect to see the best players, but a superstar playing his best ball in the prime of his career is a scary prospect.

The Lakers faced Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant in the first round last year after Durant was coming off a historic regular season when he became the youngest scoring champ in league history, but were able to escape a threat by the Thunder when Ron Artest held Durant to just 35 percent shooting for the series.

But Durant was more one dimensional.

You think you stop Paul, as Bryant thought he did with nine seconds left and the Lakers trailing by two as the Hornets' shot clock was about to expire, and he still beats you as he found a cutting Jarrett Jack with the pass that led to a seven-foot jumper to put New Orleans up by four.

"He just pressed the issue, that's all," Jackson said. "He pressed the game in the second half and delivered for them."

Now the Lakers are hard pressed to find a solution to stop Paul who seems to be getting better with every game.

As Paul walked off the floor a New Orleans usher said, "I'll see you on Thursday [Game 6] for the elimination game."

He wasn't talking about the Hornets season being over.

Dave McMenamin covers the Lakers for ESPNLosAngeles.com.

Warren: The inconvenient Resurrection

A medical doctor has told me that I am not the same person I was 50 years ago. This, I already suspected, on subjective grounds. But by his more objective, scientific account, every cell in my body has been replaced in the time since I was a child.

How he can know that is a puzzle to me. By his own account, there may be 100 trillion cells in a human body: male or female; rich or poor; smart or stupid; old or young. All are specialized, and most are hard to get at.

How are we to be sure we have checked every one?

The argument against Easter is similar to this. We simply infer that if something is very unlikely, it has never happened. We do not carefully review 100 trillion possible exceptions.

Human bodies, once dead, tend to stay that way, and indeed the exceptions are so rare, that not a single case is known to medical science.

There are cases of resuscitation from quite morbid conditions, when the patient gives standard indications of death. He may, for instance, lack a pulse and not be breathing; nor stirring in any other way. Doctors in the old Westminster Hospital in London provided me with an anecdote or two; and some rich, dark humour on the associated condition of "brain death."

By the biblical account, the Resurrection we celebrate at Easter was not entirely unprecedented.

Consider the case of Lazarus of Bethany, restored to life, according to the Gospel of John, after four days in the tomb. An important detail is provided: the body was actually stinking with decay when the tomb was opened.

Christ called Lazarus forth, and he emerged, in his grave swaddling.

That chapter, John 11, contains several memorable phrases, echoed through every language that Christianity has touched. One is, "I am the Resurrection and the Life," with what follows, in which Jesus unambiguously states that he can, in effect, do anything; and that all who believe in Him will, in the consummation of time, be themselves resurrected.

Another is the famous shortest verse in the Bible, at least in the King James Version. It is: "Jesus wept."

Put those two statements together and one comes to an important theological inference. It is that God Himself hates death. And this in itself is a mystery worth puzzling upon, when we take Him for the author of a world, in which death and life seem inseparably paired.

In what the late pope, John Paul, called "the culture of death," the fact of death is final. To "live on in the memory of others" is all very well, but they will die, too. In the alternative, atheist view of the world, everything comes in the end to nothing. It is the precise opposite to the universe we perceive, in which everything apparently came from nothing, and exists triumphantly in the face of the "nothing" that would be, had the universe been designed instead by, say, Jean-Paul Sartre.

Lazarus, according to church tradition, preserved to this day both West and East (i.e. by both Catholics and Orthodox), went on to die again. Indeed, I'm aware of two distinctly ancient subsequent tombs: one in France and one in Cyprus.

The two traditions, which generally agree on matters of substance, vary on this point. Whereas, on the Resurrection of Christ, there is total and precise agreement, East and West, Catholic and Protestant. And while modern scholars (and non-scholars) of little or no faith, seek to present the received account of the Resurrection as myth -as a source of vague uplift to the first Christians; as a poetical means to express their "feelings" -they must override the plain meaning of biblical texts to do so.

I place no confidence whatever in the opinions of men who, nearly 20 centuries after the fact, and on the basis of their own, often fatuous speculations, claim to know what really happened.

Who contradict what was witnessed by men of quite obviously powerful mind and sharp sanity; men who themselves were perfectly aware that their claim to have met the Resurrected Christ flew in the face of all conventional understanding, and would get them mocked.

For that ancient Greek and Roman world was no more inclined to believe Osiris stories than our postmodern one. The societies into which Christianity first came were no less jaded than the ones we live within today. Background conditions of life change little.

The original apostles were men who, in each and every case, were willing to die rather than deny what they had seen. They were men who, as much historical evidence attests, were actually put to death because they refused to deny it; and suffered their martyrdoms willingly.

I find the testimony of such men more plausible than the testimony of the smug and unchallenged.

There was nothing comfortable about the Crucifixion. There was nothing slight about the Resurrection.

And on this Easter morning they stand triumphantly in the face of everything that is comfortable and glib and convenient and proceeding towards . . . nothing.

Lindsay Lohan released from jail

Lindsay Lohan was freed from Lynwood Correctional Facility at 9:21 p.m. Friday night after posting $75,000 bail. The actress was sentenced earlier in the day to 120 days in jail for violating her probation by taking a necklace from a jewelry store.

Judge Stephanie Sautner felt that when Lohan walked out of the store wearing the necklace, she showed intent to keep it.

"I see the intent here," Sautner said. "I see a level of brazenness with, 'Let me see what I can get away with here.'"

But the judge reduced the felony grand theft to a misdemeanor level, saying, "I'm going to give her an opportunity," reports AP.

She also said she hoped to give the Mean Girls star a dose of perspective by sentencing her to almost 500 hours of community service, including time at the county morgue and 300 hours at a women's shelter.

It is unclear what effect the sentence may have on Lohan's next acting role. Producers of the film Gotti: Three Generations announced on Wednesday that Lohan had been cast to play the wife of John Gotti Jr. in the film.

Lohan did not visibly react to the sentence, reports AP. She cried earlier in the day when her lawyer, Shawn Holley told Sautner that Lohan had been punished enough, and recounted the treatment programs the actress has completed since her first arrest for drunken driving in 2007.

Her father, Michael Lohan, put his hands over his face at times Friday and bolted from the courtroom after his daughter was led away by sheriff's personnel.

It was the fourth time Lohan has been sentenced to jail, although three trips amounted to a few hours. Last summer, she spent 14 days in jail on a 90 day sentence.

Sautner set a trial date on the misdemeanor charge for June 3 and a pre-trial date for May 11.
