3D LG aims to increase notebook sales by 30 percent

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said on Monday it aimed to raise the 3D notebook shipments by 30 percent in 2011, and that makes a big bet on booming sales of 3D products run on television.

LG, the second largest maker of televisions, predicted that worldwide sales of notebook 3D fivefold increase next year to 1.1 million units and jump to 13.8 million units in 2015.

"With the availability of more content in 3D, consumers enjoy a new experience, and we believe will drive growth of the 3D software market," said Harrison Park, LG mobile PC business communications team leader, told reporters .

Interest in 3D has developed rapidly driven in part by the hit film "Avatar", released in late 2009, which alone sensitized to 60 percent from 40 percent among U.S. consumers.

LG on Monday introduced three models of 3D laptops priced between 1.6 million won ($ 1,331) and 1. ₩ 9000000, a premium of approximately 20 percent to 2D conventional products.

With the need for glasses to view 3D content stands as a major obstacle to the uptake of the technology, 3D is more likely to succeed on the screens seen by one viewer as a team and mobile displays, say some experts.

LG said earlier this year has been the goal of selling one million 3D TVs this year.
